Thanksgiving Message from Governor Laurence Donoghue
Fellow District 4-L3 Lions: Today we are still celebrating our wonderful Thanksgiving weekend. We have much to be very thankful for our family, ourfriends, our neighbors, our health, our work, our ability and willingness to help and serve others less fortunate than ourselves, our membership in the greatest and largest service organization in the entire world, our District, and our Club. Please also include in your thanks all American hero's, including all men and women who have or currently are serving on our Military, and all men and women who have or currently are serving in public safety uniform. Hero's indeed, as they serve to protect us from harms way. who run to the danger or need, be it enemies, offenders, the injured, or fire, while we run to flee or escape it. Let us also give thanks to our Lions founder Melvin Jones, and also to Helen Keller, who back in 1925 asked us "Will you not constitute yourselves Knights of the Blind in this crusade against darkness?". Yes Helen, we each promise we will continue to crusade against the blind, the deaf, the sick, the injured, the homeless, the hungry, the desperate, and the victims of natural disasters. It has been such a joy for Bhee and I to have come to work, help, and serve with each of you, We remain so very gratefulthat you have allowed us to serve you as your District Governor team. You and your families will be our friends for at least 100 more Thanksgivings. For those of you who could not come two weeks ago to our November 16 2nd Membership Meeting or our November 16 Tribute Dinner to our Club Presidents, I have attached to this email a copy of our latest District Bulletin. Many thanks to our DB Editors, Roy and Evangeline Tabberrah for their very excellent work as District BulletinEditors. There is something else Bhee and I have much to be thankful for. We are so very thankful to our entire District 4-L3, especially those District 4-L3 Clubs and members who stepped forward at our Tribute Dinner to our Club Presidents, and answered Multiple District 4 Council Chairperson Derek Ledda's personal plea for donations, to help the victims of the recentPhilippine disasters. Over $100,000 in pledges for money and supplies, in one night from one District, was raised. A notable of expression of love, kindness, and generosity indeed. I have also attached to this email and letter from our Council of Governors giving tribute to this remarkable Lion service. To all District 4-L3 Lions, and your families, a very genuine and personal thank you this wonderful Thanksgiving week-end.
District Governor Larry Donoghue and District Secretary Bhee
Saturday Nov. 16 is just three days away, and there are some very important reasons why I am asking each one of you to please attend.
1) At both the morning 2nd Membership Meeting, which starts at 8:30 am at Vista Mar School, 737 Hawaii Street, El Segundo, CA, and our evening Tribute to Our Club Presidents dinner celebration, which starts at 7:00 pm at the Torrance Marriott Hotel, 3635 Fashion Way, Torrance, CA 90503, we will be honored to have as our guest speaker Lion Derek Ledda, Council Chair of our MD-4 Council of Governors.
Lion Council Chair Derek will be giving a brief report on the status of our entire State of California Multiple Districts, and most importantly promoting a major LCIF and MD-4 fundraising effort to help provide desperately needed assistance from the current earthquake, super typhoon, and storm disasters in the Philippines. In the last few weeks, the Filipino people have had to face the Bohol earthquake, a world record breaking Yolanda typhoon, another storm earlier this week, and a third storm hitting today or tomorrow.
The current situation in the Philippines is quite desperate. Thousands have died, and many thousands more remain homeless, foodless, and with nothing left but literally the clothes on their back. The Philippines have always been very good to LCI Lionism worldwide, and also to the United States of America. They have been a very friendly nation, and a strong military ally and supporter to the USA, including use of Filipino military troops throughout the 1900's and 2000's. Last night at a L.A. Wilshire governor visitation, 2VDG Ki Hyo Shin reminded me that Filipino military troops were major contributors in the 1950's Korean War against North Korea.
This is all to say that the Filipina people have always helped us Lions, and helped the USA. It is time to help them.
District Secretary Bhee has recently emailed to most of you a letter from LCIF Chair and IPIP Wayne Madden expressing the urgent need for help.
Three of our District 4-L3 Clubs, the Kayumangi, L.A. Maharlika, and the L.A. New Millennium, have already indicated to me they are in the process of raising and donating significant amounts. Our District will also be seeking a one-time modification in our Constitution's Article VI, Section 9(a) to be allowed to contribute out of our Disaster Fund.
Please let us use this Saturday, November 16's morning membership meeting and our evening Tribute to Club Presidents as also an opportunity to be strong generous Lions, to "We Serve", and serve our lovely desperate Filipino friends. Be ready to bring your announcements of your donations.
2) To emphasize and insure promotion and coordination of this urgently needed cause, I am immediately announcing the formation of a Special District Committee for Urgent Relief for the Current Philippine Disasters. Headed by Lion District Cabinet Continuing Director Violy Sioson, its members include DG Larry Donoghue, 1VDG Sonja Menor, 2VDG Ki Hyo Shin, PDG Joel and Dr. Teri Pastor, PDG and District Treasurer Max Dominguez, PDG Sid Sioson, PDG Dick Selway, PDG Don Chinery, District Cabinet Song Leader Bob Crowther, District Cabinet Parliamentarian Marvin Barroquillo, District Cabinet Tail Twister Roque Ferreira, District Cabinet Bulletin Editor Vangie Tabberrah, Lion Judith Averia, and Lion Bob Keyes. These 16 District 4-L3 Lion leaders have expressed a particular interest in this matter, and are making themselves available at this immediate urgent time to help coordinate and promote this special effort.
Other important reasons to attend, especially our evening Tribute to Our Club Presidents dinner celebration, include an announcement regarding our new Special District Committee for Accountability, Integrity, and Transparency in Handling District and Club Money, and most of all, to show special tribute and recognition to our very committed and hardworking Club Presidents.
Please join me this Saturday morning and Saturday evening.
District 4-L3 Governor, Larry Donoghue
District 4-L3 has a new Governor and Cabinet!
